  The web magazine The Rappahannock Review , published by the Department of English and Linguistics at the University of Mary Washington in the United States, has featured my tanka "Snow Falling", a reading, and an interview. This is the first time my translated tanka have been published in the English-speaking world. The University of Mary Washington, founded in 1908, is located in Virginia. I learned that the title of the magazine, Rappahannock , comes from the name of a river that flows through the state. Their website, decorated with charming illustrations of fish swimming in the river, is wonderfully inviting. If you are interested, I would be delighted if you took a look! In the interview for The Rappahannock Review , I was asked deeply thoughtful questions that gave me a valuable opportunity to reflect once again on my creative work. "To me, the message in this issue is clear. We are in pain. In writing that pain and reading that pain, we need not bear it alone....

  Nakanoshima, Osaka Enthusiasm heals me. 熱量に癒される。 Continuing is a challenge in itself. 続けることもチャレンジ。

  Desire alone is not enough to sustain a life. 欲だけでは、生きてゆけない。 Creative pursuits often require time spent doing nothing. クリエイティブな活動には、何もしない時間が必要なのかもしれない。

  Kurumazuka park. Hirakata, Osaka, Japan Simply by being alive, everyone is doing their best. 生きているだけで、みんな頑張っている。 Temperature affects performance. 気温はパフォーマンスに影響する。

  Believe, then doubt. 信じて、疑う。 I don’t make my case until I'm backed into a corner. 切羽詰まらないと、主張できない。 Taking time to organize your thoughts — even by doing nothing — is important, too. 何もせずに、脳を整理する時間も大事。

  Personal happiness includes the happiness of humanity as one of its elements. 個人の幸福には、人類の幸福も要素として含まれる。 The difference between “being influenced” and “standing by someone” . 「影響される」と「寄り添う」の違い。

  Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art Even if the acorn sprouts are trampled, life goes on. 橡栗の芽が踏み躙られても、人生は続く。 The feeling of looking down on others will come back to torment you. 他人を侮る気持ちは、返ってきて自分を苦しめる。

My haikus have been featured in the UK-based online magazine “PANORAMA” 🌸   “Cherry Blossoms” is a very quintessentially Japan-esque title, but I tried to create a collection that goes beyond just being Japanese vibe, with depth and breadth. They’re some of my own favorite haikus, and perhaps they lean a bit toward Impressionism...   I’d be really happy if you took the time to read them. Also, please check out the works by other contributors too!   The magazine is filled with fictions, nonfiction pieces, and stunning visuals.   Most of the contributors are from the UK and the US, but you’ll also occasionally see writers from India, Canada, Australia, and other countries.

  Hirakata, Riverside of the Yodo River With deep understanding, one’s way of thinking becomes brighter. 深い理解で、考え方は明るくなる。 Use both your mind and your heart. 頭も、心も使うこと。 Reason and sensibility are different, yet they are connected. 理性と感性は、違うけれどつながっている。 I want to touch the eternal and universal, like the philosophers of ancient times. 永遠普遍に触れてみたい。古代の哲学者のように。 Self-interest leads to altruism.  Altruism and self-interest are connected. 利己は利他に至る。 利他と利己はつながっている。

  Nakanoshima, Osaka Knowledge tells us that reality is not fully understood and probably never will be. 現実は完全に理解されていない、されることはおそらくないということが、知識によってわかる。 Everyone to some extent. It’s mutual. みんなある程度。お互いさま。

  Recognizing the warmth of humanity and its value. 人間のあたたかさと、その価値を認めること。 Everyone is connected to justice. 誰もが正義とつながっている。 con+science＝conscience  Perhaps words carry fundamental principles. 共に+科学＝良心 言葉には基本的な理念があるのかもしれない。 Sharing pure emotions. きれいな感情を共有すること。 Work that fulfills the spirit of philanthropy. 博愛の精神が満たされる仕事。
